Master in Middle Eastern Studies

Overview

The Master in Middle Eastern Studies will be a unique addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in Ramallah Campus. This program is the first of its kind in Palestine that focuses in the Middle Eastern issues in depth and provides student with in-depth and analytical knowledge of the contemporary middle-eastern causes and issues from a Palestinian, Arabic and International perspective. The program focuses on the political, economic and social dynamics of the Middle East region, with some studying for its international relations.

The courses of this program will focus on doing internal and external political analysis to other geographic areas related to the Middle East, such as China and some active countries from Latin America and Africa. The program will cover different knowledge fields since it involves the using of international relations and security theories, sociology, international law and diplomacy. Moreover, this program will study the Middle Eastern issues through the analysis of literature, writings, and intellectual thoughts of Arab and foreigners of different beliefs.

 

Goals

The Master in Middle Eastern Studies aims to provide student with in-depth and analytical knowledge of the contemporary middle-eastern causes and issues from a Palestinian, Arabic and International perspective. The program focuses on the political, economic and social dynamics of the Middle East region, with some studying for its international relations.

The courses of this program will focus on doing internal and external political analysis to other geographic areas related to the Middle East, such as China and some active countries from Latin America and Africa.

The program will cover different knowledge fields since it involves the using of international relations and security theories, sociology, international law and diplomacy. Moreover, this program will study the Middle Eastern issues through the analysis of literature, writings, and intellectual thoughts of Arab and foreigners of different beliefs. For instance, the program contributes in introducing the Islamic political thought, its features, resources, establishment, its main concepts such as authority, freedom, state, justice, the main schools and aspects in it such as Sunnis, Shiites, Kharijites, Mu'tazila, the political thoughts of: Al-Farabi, Al-Mawardi and Al-Ghazali, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Khaldun, and the trends in Islamic political thought in the Renaissance and the modern era. In addition the program will study the political Islamic field and its opinion concerning the basic issues in the Arab communities and the relation between political Islam and Europe and USA. Moreover, the program will study the contemporary Islamic intellectual parties, such as (the conservative, Salafi, revival, centrist, and reformist parties), and issues of political change, development, and the relationship of Islamic societies with the world in general and the West in particular. Also the program will analyze the opinion of Islamic movements towards modernity, international relations, innovation in Islamic thought, and their proposed solutions for Islamic countries in today's world.

 

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME

This program will graduate a generation of Palestinian researchers who are specialized in the Middle Eastern issues and international relations. It will also graduate a generation that will be able to understand the different international strengths and alliances in the world, and its affect on the Middle East area, in addition to understanding and analyzing the internal map of the Middle East from all political, social and economic levels. This degree will contribute in graduating a new generation of Palestinian youth who are able to understand the Middle East alliances and the relation between Iran, the gulf area and Turkey with the Middle East area. Students will be able to analyze the policies of main players in the area especially Iran, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and Turkey by spotting the light on the importance of the strategic and geopolitical location of the Middle East. Student will also study the political boarders (land, sea and river) boarders of the Arab World and the problems with the neighboring countries. Researchers of this program will be able to analyze the Arab national and regional groupings (the League of Arab States, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Arab Maghreb Union, and others), and their political repercussions on the Arab world. Also students will be able to do a theory processing to the regional systems especially in light of the debate about whether it is an Arab or Middle Eastern regional system? And the nature of the alliances and reconciliatory structural networks.

 

Careers of Graduates

Graduates will be able to work in governmental positions like the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the security organizations. They can also work in universities and local and international research and media organizations. Furthermore, graduates of this program can work in the civil society organizations and the non-governmental organizations.
