Abstract:
Ideologically, MacDonald uses the fantasy realm in the story as a narrative device that allows him to comment on the Victorian norms of parenting and to emphasize an alternative model based on the Christian virtues of love, trust and obedience. Therefore, the fantasy mode is used as a metaphor for reality with an ideological function.
