Overview

The advantages of learning foreign languages are increasing as the world becomes increasingly globalized and bilingualism. In fact, it is now perhaps the most useful real-world skill to ever exist.

Foreign language study is all about learning how to truly communicate and connect with others—an incredibly important life skill that can only be cultivated by interacting with people. When you master a foreign language, you can exercise your new superhuman power of being able to understand what someone is saying, recall the proper vocabulary and grammar, put that vocabulary and grammar into the proper context, and reply back—all on the spot and in a timely manner. You’ve connected.

Therefore, the Arab American University is keen to provide equal opportunities for its students to learn and gain knowledge that take into account individual differences in personality of the learner and different characteristics to be good citizens for themselves, their families and their community. To achieve this purpose emerged the need to qualify future graduates.

This program is designed to prepare graduates to be skilled, innovative and challenging.

The program acquaints students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to learn the languages they choose.

The program combines the academic study of language with practical training. It prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities teaching and research in language and acquisition to publishing, media, and different government and nongovernment institutions require language knowledge.

The student has to pass at least 124 credit hours to earn the BA Degree in Double Major in Languages.

Note: The student has to choose TWO languages out of the languages offered.

Goals

  • In this program, students will gain adequate background in FLs that prepares them for working in different kinds of jobs.
  • Prepare graduates for foreign language teaching and non- teaching careers using modern techniques mainly Technology.
  • Build strong theoretical background for students with the aim of helping them to assess problems and local issues in the field of FLs education.
  • Gain the skill to write effectively and to provide vigilant and updated analysis to the field of FLs education and research centers and policy-makers.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of content-specific skills and/or concepts and apply that understanding to the construction of meaningful learning activities.
  • Demonstrate strong and fluent communication skills. 
  • Exhibit the capacity for professional growth by developing questions about their work as educators, by engaging in inquiry and reflection to address their questions, by applying their understanding to improve learning, teaching, and school organization, and by participating in professional development activities.
  • Develop student’s proficiency in foreign languages
  • Develop positive attitudes and appreciation toward world languages and cultures in our global society.

 

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME

Students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate oral & written communication skills in context
  2. Practice Micro and Macro teaching.
  3. Demonstrate critical and analytical reading skills
  4. Demonstrate literary and cultural competency
  5. Gain in-depth knowledge of specific research topics or areas in FLs education.
  6. Show awareness and acceptance of other nations’ cultures
  7. Demonstrate advanced translation skills. This will be achieved through exposure, over four years, to a wide selection of texts covering a range of registers, including journalistic and literary.
  8. Demonstrate independent research skills.
  9. Demonstrate familiarity in using technology for language mediation, at an advanced level.

 

Career of Graduates

The program is designed to train students in the field of dual languages. This program will prepare students with the solid background and experiences, technology and learning theories to be effective graduates who can enter the market easily. Double major program at the AAUP seeks to develop graduates who can:

  • Develop, apply, integrate and generate scientific knowledge in educational and professional contexts;
  • Orally present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects
  • Explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options
  • Use a range of skills and methods to identify, analyze and respond to problems and issues;
  • Convey and relate professional and disciplinary information and ideas to diverse audiences in effective and appropriate ways;
  • Work in both independent and collaborative ways with others to encompass diverse abilities and perspectives; and
  • Exercise personal, professional and social responsibility as a global citizen.
  • This program offers its graduates the opportunity to challenge and discipline their thinking about different topics.
  • Graduates of the program will be prepared for numerous career opportunities, including:
    1. Teaching: graduates of the program will be trained as elementary school subject teachers.
    2. Graduate programs in FLs or related fields.
