Faculty of Business Students’ Handbook on Code of Ethics and Conduct

The Faculty of Business is committed to fostering a safe environment by enforcing behavior standards. Students must maintain academic integrity, respect others (including their rights and property), the safety of others, etc.  Forms of misconduct include (but not limited to):

• Discrimination (verbal or physical).

• Intentional damage/destruction of Faculty of Business, faculty/staff, or other students’ property.

• Disruptiveness in class or Faculty of Business sponsored event.

• Inability or refusal to produce the university issued ID card.

• Participating in illegal activities or activities not authorized by the Faculty of Business.

• Involvement in any form of harassment.

• Recording (audio or video) lectures without prior consent.

• Engaging in disorderly or indecent conduct.

   

• Warning:  This indicates the student’s action was in violation of the code and further misconduct will result in severe disciplinary action.

• Monetary penalty.

• Suspension:  The student may be suspended for a specific period of time.

• Expulsion:  The student will be expelled from the Faculty of Business permanently.
   

• Correctly acknowledge and cite the use of words, materials, ideas, or results of others.

• Correctly acknowledge all those who contributed to a given piece of work.

• Ensure that all course work submitted as his/her own is made without the help of materials or cooperation that he/she doesn’t have permission to use.

• Acquires all data or results ethically and reports them accurately and without suppression.

• Treat all other students ethically and respect their integrity and right to pursue their education without interference.

Failing to comply with these principles negatively affects the reputation of the Faculty of Business as well as the value of the degrees awarded to its students. Violations of this policy include (but not limited to):

1. Plagiarism – using another’s production without crediting the source.

2. Cheating – This includes (but not limited to):

   • Copying during exams, copying assignments (term papers, theses, etc.).
   • Allowing or helping copying, writing or taking an exam for someone else.
   • Unauthorized use of material, copying, collaboration, and purchase of papers or materials.
   • Making up or manipulating data and reporting them in a thesis or publication.
   • Creating sources or citations that do not exist.
   • Signing another student’s name on a research paper, report, assignment, thesis, etc.

3. Conflict of interest – This is a clash of personal/private interests with professional activities. Professional independence, objectivity and commitment must be protected and an appearance of impropriety avoided.  Potential conflicts of interests must be revealed to the appropriate authorities in writing in order to foster transparency and promote credibility.
    

• Compile and describe data accurately and use proper methodology for computing and experiments.

• Avoid “copying and pasting”.  Write in your own words at all times.

• Primary and secondary data should be carefully recorded and saved, and the original version should be saved.

• Truthfulness about the data is essential. Do not omit some data to make an outcome better.

• Well-kept notes is in proper notebooks is very important for reference later.

• Ensure credit is given to previous material using proper citations. This includes what is used from your own published work.
   

• Student’s role – The student is responsible for checking for plagiarism before submitting work, and must be knowledgeable of the Faculty of Business’s academic guidelines. The student should quickly report any misconduct in the academic integrity policy.

• Faculty’s role – The faculty must make sure everything is done using the appropriate methods and data is properly recorded and saved.  Manuscripts/theses should be reviewed carefully.  The faculty is responsible for personally maintaining academic integrity and must inform the students of the policy within their courses.  They must make sure that academic dishonesty is kept to a minimum and quickly take proper actions to violations.

• Faculty of Business’s role – Both the student and the Faculty of Business are negatively affected by a breach of academic integrity, and this can lead to punishment.  A student’s first violation may result in a warning and/or a failing grade in the course. Any further violation could lead to the student being expelled.  The faculty should inform the department Chairperson of any violations, who can then select a committee to investigate and decide on what measures should be taken.
